Workflow Management with JTX from ESRI

GIS is often a component of a complex workflow, whether as part of data maintenance or as part of spatial analysis and cartography. The Job Tracking Extension (JTX) from ESRI is a sophisticated workflow management system designed specifically to integrate with ESRI’s GIS software and geodatabase structure, but also extends beyond the traditional boundaries of GIS.

JTX “jobs” consist of specific edits, updates to maps, or data transformations. JTX transports jobs through the organisation, from group to group or even person to person, each one with their own responsibilities for the job. JTX can be used to reduce conflicts between different editors’ edit areas. It can automatically pass jobs from an editor to a QC specialist and, if necessary, back again to the editor with comments for corrections. JTX job information, which is stored in relational databases, just like ArcSDE, can be used to determine who is currently holding on to a job, how long a job has been in the possession of a particular person or group, or when and why specific tasks were performed.

In addition, JTX is used to track changes to the databases and to maps. In contrast to Geodatabase History, introduced in ArcGIS 9.2, JTX tracks when and how changes were made, as well as the reason for the changes – a unique feature of JTX. In this way, JTX adds a crucial level of accountability and traceability to geodatabase edits and map production.
