Agribusiness Solutions

The NSG Group has been working in the agribusiness field for over eight years helping organisations to improve the efficiencies of their agribusiness management. This work has included the setting up of a National Agricultural farm database to serve as a basis to monitor herd management, including animal health and tracking. These agribusiness solutions have extended to include plant and animal pest management.

The NSG Group has developed a number of specific application solutions built upon ESRI technonlogy including ArcGIS, ArcIMS and ArcGIS Server.

Disease Management Information System
DMIS is a transactional system that tracks livestock movement and monitors this movement in terms of risk areas, movement control zones and testing regimes, especially for TB (tuberculosis). As a herd moves from farm to farm, a web service queries whether the herd comes from or moves to any of these risk areas. Rules are then applied in terms of granting permission, testing or restrictions.

TB Investigation System The TB Investigation System assists with the analysis of herds and herd infection across New Zealand and assists in the design of the control boundaries for vector control. The most common TB vectors in New Zealand are the Possums (an introduced species, now considered a pest). Possum control boundaries are based on a hierarchy of operational strata, vector control zones and TB management areas. They are based on possum habitat. Possum habitat is defined by land use derived from a land cover database. Farms (to which herds are attached) are located by XY coordinates. The TBI application consists of a number of tools to assist in the spatial analysis of this data.

Animal pest management
A field application for animal pest management is primarily used for possum control monitoring. The solution provides agribusinesses with information on catch data, underlying properties and enables quick mapping and automated reporting. The animal pest management application analyses land cover, operational strata and possum habitat and calculates trap line requirements and automates allocation of trap lines based on standard protocols. This application can support monitoring of other animal pest species, such as rooks, ferrets, stoats and rabbits.

Plant pest management
The application for plant pest management has been used both in the field and in the office. The application assists officers with monitoring, notifications and recording of plant infestations and control activities.

The Tumbleweed application provides the ability to find, map and record plant pest infestations on site. Search functions are used to locate a particular site i.e. Farm, owner, address, road name, coordinates etc. The application will identify data layers and attributes including property valuation data, and zoom to selected features. Once a land parcel is selected the application returns data in relation to past visits to that site and allows for new visits to be recorded.

When defining an area of interest the appropriate shape can be drawn. The measuring tool allows for more accurate estimation of size and location. The newly drawn polygons can then be associated to the corresponding inspection record.

An entry advice and visit notice is able to be printed and left with the property owner.

The application is built on the ArcGIS Engine with MS SQL Express for use on tablets and laptops.
