Mobile GIS Development
The NSG Group has extensive experience in developing mobile GIS solutions based on ESRI’s mobile platform ArcPad. We also have very good insight into the performance of the available mobile hardware and we are a reseller for the world-leading GPS-laser device made in New Zealand – the ike – which uses ArcPad for its pre-loaded data capture application.
NSG has always been at the forefront of ArcPad development and has developed two proprietary applications within ArcPad Studio – XPLreact and XPLx-ray vision.
XPLreact was built to assist with emergency response by providing information on available resources in the field and the means to rapidly survey incidents. It provides database access, mapping and GIS and GPS integration allowing the user to quickly find features on a map, draw freehand features, capture features, add and manipulate map layers, zoom to GPS coordinates, add points, lines and polygons and measure distances on a map. NSG can also build custom features specific to client requirements.
XPLx-ray vision is a bundled offer of hardware and software. It runs on the ike device to deliver added value GIS capability to the ike’s standard capability. ike combines a GPS, laser range finder, digital camera, compass, inclinometer, PDA, WiFi, and GIS – all packaged in a single device. A key feature of the ike is that the user does not have to be on the site in question. He/she can be up to one kilometre away as long as the laser has line of sight. This means that data can be captured from a safe distance – e.g. from a levee, on stable ground, across a freeway or harbour, or from outside a building that is unsafe to approach!
NSG’s XPLx-ray vision creates the ability to virtually "see through walls" and gain critical information about any object ike is pointed at. Utilizing any existing spatial data, ike with XPLx-ray vision can retrieve relevant information without the users knowing where they are or what they are looking at. It enables the ike user to access, interrogate and update geospatial data in the field just by pointing the ike at a building, piece of land, or an outdoor device and pressing a few buttons.
NSG continues to innovate with the ike and ArcPad technology. We are currently working with clients to improve the integration of GPS-tagged digital photography with enterprise-wide systems, such as ArcSDE, document management systems, and ArcGIS Server. We develop in a variety of environments, including C# in the .NET environment, and C++ for the ike, when specialised extensions need to be created that drive individual ike components, such as the camera and compass.
